Art / Film / Games
Join IGDA Los Angeles for a unique cross media exploration of artistic design. The meeting will be held in a great new space at the Gnomon School in Hollywood. Our panel of experts will be discussing the creative differences in the artistic design process between film and games.
Panelists:
Ian Joyner
Character/Creature Designer
Legacy Effects
Ian has been working in the entertainment
industry for over 10 years with a focus on character and creature design and
development for film and games. He has worked with some of the largest names
including but not limited to EA, Volition Inc, Sony, Gentle Giant, Blur,
Sideshow Collectibles, Stan Winston Studios/Legacy Effects. His work can be
seen in such films as the upcoming Amazing
Spider-Man, The Muppet Movie, The Hunger Games as well as recent releases
including Thor, Cowboys and Aliens
and Iron Man 2. On the game side, Ian
has worked on a great number of cinematic and in-game characters for projects
like Mass Effect 2, Red Faction:
Armageddon, Thor: God of Thunder and Prototype.
Cecil Kim
Co-Owner / Creative Director of Section Studios
Cecil has been working as a concept artist and illustrator in the entertainment industry for the past 15 years. Originally from Seoul, Korea, Cecil moved to the U.S. with a dream to pursue an art career, and studied Illustration and Fine Arts at the prestigious Art Center College of Design. Cecil began his career in the game industry as a cinematic storyboard artist for SquareUSA. With strong layout and detailed environment sketches, he began designing memorable locations in Final Fantasy IX and later joined Sony Santa Monica Studio where he devoted seven years of his career creating the God of Warseries as Visual Development Lead. Cecil also teaches at various institutions such as Gnomon School of Visual Effects, Art Center College of Design and Otis College of Art and Design where he serves as Concept Art Area Head. From hi-level production art to prop design, Cecil's intuitive and energetic artistic style has been inspirational creative fuel to the directors and production team at Sony Santa Monica.

David Levy
Concept Artist
David Levy is a leading international concept artist. He studied industrial design and architecture in France and the Netherlands respectively, and is currently working in Los Angeles, California as senior concept artist in the movie industry. He has contributed to the development of Prince of Persia 3, assassin's creed while at Ubisoft in Montreal, Tron legacy, The Thing and Prometheus in Los Angeles. His unique interests merge video gaming, film and his industrial design background to create fantasy elements at many scales.
Jerry O'Flaherty
Art Director / Filmmaker
Earning
the first of many awards for computer animation as a teenager, Jerry worked to
hone his skills in the digital realm while continuing to focus energy
on more traditional mediums. During his time in Film school at the
University of North Texas, Jerry was running a game studio and directing a film
project at the same time. The success of his game company led to
larger and higher profile studios and opportunities, Ion Storm and Westwood
Studios to name just two. Most notably O'Flaherty was responsible for the
award winning visuals in the massively successful game Gears of War. His
understanding of both the technical limitations and the artistic needs allowed
him to craft a style that brought the video gaming experience to the most
cinematic quality to date. The critically acclaimed camera work and
visual style are a direct result of Jerry's expertise as both a filmmaker and
visual director. Melding his video game knowledge with his work in
the commercial and film world, O’Flaherty is intent on pushing the boundaries
of how the two worlds overlap.
